Jeff Geerling recently got his hands on the SiFive HiFive Premier P550. The marketing pitch? It is the "fastest RISC-V development board on the market today." The reality? It’s a $400 computer that barely keeps up with a Raspberry Pi 3.
Don't get me wrong, having an open instruction set (ISA) architecture that isn't owned by Intel or ARM is critical for the future of computing. But looking at the state of the hardware today, that future is still a long way off.
Here are the "highlights" from Jeff's testing:
This board is for kernel developers and compiler engineers, not for us. It’s a proof of concept that you can buy.
If you are excited about RISC-V, be excited about the software support closing the gap. But don't throw your wallet at this unless you really, really love debugging Linux kernel panics.
